The settlement originated with a memoir that the Reverend Jean-Louis Gibert addressed to the board of trade in 1763 regarding a project to settle a group of Huguenots in North America.

Its natural beauty led to the transformation of Hilton Head from an isolated backwater to a world-famous resort and recreational community during the second half of the twentieth century.

Holiness spread to South Carolina’s second largest Protestant denomination, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (MECS), in the 1870s and 1880s, although denominational leaders opposed the teaching.

In 1813 Holland published his own collection of poetry, Odes, Naval Songs, and Other Occasional Poems. Influenced by the British Romantics’ trend of sea poetry, Holland’s writing often praised the U.S. Navy and emphasized patriotic themes.

In 1958 Hollings was elected governor on a multifaceted platform that focused on balancing the state budget, bringing new industry to South Carolina, improving public education, and promoting technical education. Inaugurated in January 1959, Hollings’s administration represented a major transitional period in state government.

A charismatic individual who never removed himself from the textile community, Hollis inspired countless anecdotes depicting self-effacing humor, his inspirational traits as educator, and his fundamental “faith in the common man.”

The town of Hollywood had its origins in the New South era. Planted in the middle of a farming district, the village grew up along the tracks of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and, later, along two-lane S.C. Highway 162.
