After the Civil War he became a leader in reorganizing the denomination, calling for the 1866 meeting of the General Conference. At that meeting he was elected a bishop, and he increasingly became the chief spokesman for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

Active in the South Carolina militia, he achieved the rank of brigadier general. After serving a single term in the state House of Representatives from 1844 to 1845, Means established himself as one of the leading fire-eaters in the South Carolina upcountry and vocal advocate of secession, a position put forth as a delegate to the Nashville Convention in 1850.

Eight South Carolinians were awarded the medal during World War I, including three who made the supreme sacrifice. Six recipients were members of the 118th Infantry, which received more Medals of Honor than any other regiment in the American Expeditionary Forces.

The society quickly acquired a leading role in medical and public health issues. In 1790 the organization planned a dispensary for the relief of the sick and indigent, which evolved into the Shirras Dispensary and served the Charleston community until merging with Roper Hospital in 1921.

From 1824 until 1913 the school received no state funding. Students purchased tickets to lectures and paid laboratory fees. The faculty maintained private practices in addition to their teaching duties. From 1823 to 1861 the school rose to national prominence.

The early nineteenth century gave rise to systematic attempts to improve medicine in South Carolina. In 1817 the General Assembly created two examining boards for physicians, apothecaries, and midwives, one of which was to be in Charleston and the other in Columbia.

Admission depended on entrance tests and was usually free. The curriculum included courses in education theory and practice, teaching advanced studies in the humanities, mathematics, and science.

Memminger’s skills were put to immediate use for the Confederacy, as he chaired the committee to draft the Confederacy’s provisional constitution. Jefferson Davis tapped him to be secretary of the treasury in 1861, a position in which Memminger would have enormous difficulties, some of which were beyond his control.

The Anabaptists differed from other Protestants in that they insisted on a conscious choice to join the church (adult baptism), a disciplined church in which members were responsible to each other, and a sharing church in which material needs were met by fellow members. They rejected the union of church and state and the validity of oaths and self-defense, including military service.

By the 1960s the property had become a monastery that housed the Trappist monks of the Cistercian Order. The monks of Mepkin Abbey began operating an egg farm, which was still functioning in the early twenty-first century, with several buildings on the property associated with that function.

Beyond its popular appeal, the mermaid touched on disputes among natural historians over the fertility of “hybrid” creatures, the existence of intermediate species in the “great chain of being,” and the unity of humankind.

The debate over slavery at the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1844 resulted in the division of the denomination into northern and southern branches.

Methodism was not warmly received among the planter and merchant elite classes in the lowcountry.

The roots of the Mexican War can be traced to westward expansion following the War of 1812. Many Americans, including many South Carolinians migrating west in search of cheap land, settled in northern Mexico where liberal land grants of as much as four thousand acres were available.

Charlestonians who received scientific works from Michaux included the Pinckney family, the Library Society of Charleston, the South Carolina Medical Society, and the botanist Stephen Elliott.

Michelin and South Carolina made a successful match. The company was not secretive about its conservative character and dislike of unions, and in South Carolina, Michelin found a base that suited its corporate values and business objectives.

Middleton Place is an Ashley River plantation located on Highway 61 (Ashley River Road) just outside Charleston.

Middleton emerged as a leader within the extreme faction of the local “patriot party” by organizing and leading raids on the royal armories, and more.

His most important contribution to the Revolution began in July 1774, when he was elected to the First Continental Congress.

During his later years Middleton, a major slaveholder, was obligated to manage the rice plantations that provided the family’s income.
