From his leadership at Howard and through his prolific writings, Miller became a national figure in the debate on race in America.

From 1822 to 1828 Miller was a member of the South Carolina Senate and an early leader in the movement toward nullification.

A loyal Republican and politically ambitious, Miller was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1874 and served until 1880.
