Announces and provides information about the 1861 session of the Edgefield Male Academy, a preparatory school.

The term “Edgefield pottery” is used to identify alkaline-glazed stoneware first produced in Edgefield District in the 1810s.

Alkaline-glazed stoneware bowl or milk pan form with wide banded rim made by Thomas Chandler. "Lime" glaze is smooth and shiny. Coloration is light beige-khaki on exterior, interior is grayish green with blue/green or celadon glaze drips and puddles. Exterior also has glaze drips. Interior is decorated with iron slip that has been applied in a loop pattern on the sides and a floral pattern on the bottom. Glaze has been wiped off the rim; exterior base is unglazed. Finger marks are apparent on exterior walls at base. Some iron spots occurred at base during firing. Clay body is red indicating a high iron content.

At the time of English colonization, the Edisto Indians were a tribe living between the Savannah and Edisto Rivers.

Edisto Island derives its name from the Edisto Indians, the island’s initial inhabitants (an Indian mound built by the Edistos survives at Edisto Beach State Park).

The gardens have expanded over the years, growing to include diverse plantings and natural areas covering more than 150 acres.

For much of the state’s history, education was left principally to families. Nonetheless, while historically the state’s support of schooling has been hesitant, sporadic, and limited, the last two decades of the twentieth century witnessed growing attention to schools.

Beginning in 2001, school and district “report cards,” indicating whether the local schools were rated as excellent, good, average, below average, or unsatisfactory, were sent to parents and published in local newspapers.

EFA is a “foundation program,” the type of school-funding system used in most states.

Although not all EIA programs have survived, the dedicated sales tax has been maintained in a separate revenue fund and continues to be used for increasing the level of South Carolina’s student achievement.

As governor, Edwards won praise, and even his detractors admitted that the former oral surgeon had done considerably better than expected.
