Pretend' cottage, owned by William and Julia Peterkin, was located in the Sunnyside section of Murrells Inlet. Residents of Fort Motte, South Carolina, the Peterkins, like many of their neighbors, traveled to coastal South Carolina to escape the malaria season. Julia's father, Julius Mood had a house a few doors down. The Peterkin cottage was built around the remains of a kitchen building that had washed up during the hurricane of 1893. There was no glass in the windows and no indoor plumbing. The Peterkins hired many of the local African-Americans to serve as 'creekboys' and cooks for the family during their time in the Inlet. The cottage was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954.

The Joseph Alston historical marker on Brookgreen Drive, tells briefly about the life of Joseph Alston (1779-1816). Alston was "educated at the College of Charleston and at Princeton. He inherited The Oaks Plantation and in 1801, married Theodosia, daughter of Aaron Burr. Alston was a member of the S.C. House (1802-12), its speaker for 5 years, (1814-16). He is buried at The Oaks Cemetery about 2 miles west".

This picture was perhaps taken at Blatt's fifty-seventh birthday party. Blatt (on the far right) is standing next to George Bell Timmerman, Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina from 1947 until 1955. Timmerman would later serve as Governor from 1955 until 1959. On the left, South Carolina First Lady Maude Byrnes stands next to Governor James F. Byrnes. At the time, these were perhaps the three most powerful men in the state of South Carolina.
