The South Caroliniana Library in Columbia has an unpublished manuscript on the evolution/creationism controversy written by Moore. Apparently written in 1923, about two years before the Scopes Trial in Dayton, Tennessee, and near the peak of the antievolution movement that erupted after World War I, Moore’s analytical examination of assertions made by antievolutionists has remained relevant long after his death.

Moore performed with Bill Napier—formerly of the Stanley Brothers—as the Dixie Partners from 1960 until 1967. Napier was adept on banjo, lead guitar, and mandolin, while Charlie handled the singing.

At the time of her marriage, Moragné began to question the propriety of writing romantic fiction, and much to the consternation of her publishers and some family members, she gave it up. She did, however, continue to produce poetry and articles of a religious nature

White and middle-class in its makeup, the New Era Club began disguised as a study group. Thirty Spartanburg women founded the club, they said, “to stimulate interest in civic affairs and to advance the industrial, legal and educational rights of women and children.”

The question of independence deeply divided the inhabitants of the district. For many colonists, land grants and protection from Indian incursions created strong devotion toward Great Britain.

An ardent proponent of states’ rights, Noble advocated public resistance to the expansion of federal power, which he deemed “highly dangerous, and subversive of our excellent frame of Government.”

In 1992 North Greenville College added bachelor’s programs, and the first bachelor’s degree was awarded in 1993. With a 2001 enrollment of approximately twelve hundred students, the college continues to award bachelor’s degrees in a variety of fields and participates in intercollegiate athletics as a part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Its mission has consistently been “to provide a quality educational experience in the context of a genuine Christian commitment.”

Numerous scientific papers, popular magazine articles, books, and even a song have been dedicated to this plant. Today the Oconee bell is considered a rare plant.

The name Oconee derives from the Cherokees and has several interpretations, the most popular being “water eyes of the hills,” in reference to the area’s many waterfalls and streams.

Granite slabs five feet long, twenty-one inches wide, and eighteen inches deep supported walls of stone and concretelike mortar that ranged from twelve to eighteen inches thick. It was one of the first concrete buildings constructed in the South.

This early industry expanded steadily during the antebellum years, with much of the capital for the enterprise coming from affluent planters anxious to enter the manufacturing field. By mid-century a total of eight furnaces had been constructed.

Oliphant’s most ambitious project, and the one for which she is most widely known, began in 1937 when Dr. Benjamin E. Geer, president of Furman University, persuaded her to write a biography of her grandfather, William Gilmore Simms. As she began research, Oliphant realized that it would be necessary to collect, edit, and publish Simms’s letters before a proper biography could be written.

Oliver is best known for a rescue mission he later founded in Columbia to serve as a refuge for homeless and troubled men. He purchased a lot at the corner of Assembly and Taylor streets in Columbia in 1888, for what became the Oliver Rescue Mission. The following year a gospel tabernacle was constructed.

Petitioned by convention members to run for governor, Orr became the first popularly elected chief executive in the state’s history. Inaugurated November 29, 1865, he and his administration saw the establishment of a state penitentiary, the provision of artificial limbs for Confederate amputees, the reopening of South Carolina College and other schools, the rebuilding of the state’s governmental infrastructure, and passage of the controversial “Black Codes,” which Orr felt was unwise.

In 1881 the textile manufacturing pioneer John H. Montgomery and his associates purchased 350 acres on the Pacolet River at Trough Shoals. The General Assembly incorporated the Pacolet Manufacturing Company the following year, and by 1884 a three-story, 10,000-spindle mill was in full operation.

Attending to the “needs of the child,” the Parker School established health, aesthetic, vocational, general education, leisure, and environmental programs for both students and adults.

n office, Patterson advocated fiscal responsibility and carefully scrutinized budgets to eliminate what she deemed to be unnecessary spending. She also favored improved health care and educational services. While in the state Senate, Patterson served as a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Hunger and Nutrition.
