Santee Canal, Near Georgetown, S.C.

The Santee Canal or the "Government Cut", linked the Winyah Bay and the North Santee River. The canal was enlarged in 1919 to a depth of 10 feet and a bottom width of 90 feet. In 1937, an additional two feet was dug out. Today, the canal is part of the Intercoastal Waterway.
