Chartered as the Greenville Higher Education Center by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education on July 1, 1987, this nonprofit consortium of higher education institutions is dedicated to increasing access to adult educational opportunities in metropolitan Greenville. The center offers more than forty-five undergraduate and graduate degrees and provides adults with educational opportunities from eight institutions: Clemson University, Furman University, Lander University, Medical University of South Carolina, South Carolina State University, University of South Carolina, University of South Carolina\u2013Upstate, and Greenville Technical College. By offering day, evening, and distance education classes, the center permits adults to work while attending college at their own pace.<\/p>\n
Originating in a suite on the Greenville Tech campus, the center changed locations as its popularity increased. In April 2001 the center completed renovations on 123,000 square feet of the former McAlister Square shopping mall. The effort created new classrooms, office space, a library, and an auditorium needed to meet the anticipated growth in enrollment. Operating with Clemson University as its fiduciary agent for budget and personnel, the center is supported by credit-hour charges, membership fees, and state appropriations. The presidents of participating institutions comprise a board of directors that oversees the center. An administrative staff manages the facility, headed by a chief executive officer. An advisory council consisting of local civic, business, and political leaders provides additional leadership.<\/p>\n
