Established in 1989, the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League has been a leading voice in the campaign to protect and preserve the coastal plain of the state. The grassroots, nonprofit organization is officiated by a staff and board of directors with offices in Columbia, Georgetown, Charleston, and Beaufort. Its mission is to \u201cprotect the threatened resources of the coastal plain\u2013its natural landscapes, abundant wildlife, clean water, and traditional communities\u2013by working with citizens and government on pro-active, comprehensive solutions to environmental challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n
League initiatives are aimed at three separate categories: land and communities, clean water, and forests and wildlife. A variety of methods, ranging from research to litigation, are used to accomplish its mission in addition to educational programs and sponsorship of environmental control. Working with businesses and communities, the league has formed alliances with other conservation groups on both the state and national levels.<\/p>\n
As advocates for conservative land development, members of the league help citizens and public officials find alternate approaches to community expansion that preserve the essence of the lowcountry and minimize problems caused by urban sprawl. The league has been a source of professional aid and technical insight to commercial enterprises and residents of coastal communities. It also has worked alongside state and federal land managers to combat the threat of suburban sprawl to rural communities by reenforcing longsighted forest management programs and restoring diminishing forest ecosystems native to the coastal plain. The league has also played a role in helping protect coastal waters and fisheries, representing South Carolina\u2019s coastline and waterways in national campaigns for environmental control.<\/p>\n
