Peterkin Home

Pretend’ cottage, owned by William and Julia Peterkin, was located in the Sunnyside section of Murrells Inlet. Residents of Fort Motte, South Carolina, the Peterkins, like many of their neighbors, traveled to coastal South Carolina to escape the malaria season. Julia’s father, Julius Mood had a house a few doors down. The Peterkin cottage was built around the remains of a kitchen building that had washed up during the hurricane of 1893. There was no glass in the windows and no indoor plumbing. The Peterkins hired many of the local African-Americans to serve as ‘creekboys’ and cooks for the family during their time in the Inlet. The cottage was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954.
